Wild Camping: The Legal Realities in Eryri

Let's be clear upfront: wild camping is not technically legal anywhere in Wales. Unlike Scotland, we don't have a right to roam that includes overnight stays. But the reality on the ground is more nuanced.

The Official Line

Snowdonia National Park (Eryri) officially discourages wild camping. You need landowner permission, which realistically you're not going to get.

The Unwritten Rules

If you're discreet, pitch late, leave early, and leave no trace, most farmers and rangers will turn a blind eye. Key word: discreet.

Where People Camp

The high camps around Snowdon's summit, the Glyderau, and the Carneddau see regular wild campers. The harder to reach, the safer you are.

What Not To Do

  • Don't light fires (seriously, just don't)
  • Don't camp in groups larger than 2-3 tents
  • Don't camp in the same spot multiple nights
  • Don't leave ANY trace

The Future

There's growing momentum for Scotland-style access rights in Wales. Watch this space.
